Lakaz Chamarel

FURTHER JOURNEYS IN MAURITIUS  brown-arrow-right.png

The lush, leafy setting of Lakaz Chamarel proves instantly relaxing, as do the bohemian, 'eco' vibe and the vast rooms and suites, which display the utmost attention to detail. You won't regret splashing out on a suite - the views over the mountains and the sea are unforgettable.

The stunning Black River Gorges area of south-west Mauritius is one of the island's most important protected habitats, and is also home to Lakaz Chamarel. A luxurious lodge nestled in verdant tropical gardens 400 metres up in the mountains, Chamarel provides a small number of sumptuous accommodation, rest and recuperation in spades, and the chance to explore a rugged and unspoilt region.

The 20 individually designed eco-lodges and suites feature original art work, antique furniture, local crafts and authentic woven palm roofs. They are dotted throughout the grounds, with lovely views of the garden's vibrant frangipani, hibiscus and mango trees. In-keeping with the natural, eco-friendly ambience, there are no TVs in the rooms; instead you are encouraged to find a tranquil spot, enjoy a spa treatment or explore nature. The four Sea View Pool suites have the benefit of infinity pools overlooking the coast and are located up a steep hill (but golf carts are provided). The wonderful Exclusive Suite is the cream of the crop - spacious and well-equipped, with mountain and sea views.

Clean mountain air and natural luxury.

Children over the age of eight are welcome at Lakaz Chamarel. The grounds provide ample, safe space for curious little ones, and the rooms sleep up to three people. There is no children's club, but babysitting is offered for a fee.

Insider Viewpoint

Lakaz Chamal is well away from the tourist trail and gives a different perspective on this beautiful island. The surrounding unspoilt landscape offers lots of opportunities for adventure, with excellent hiking and cycle trails; and you don't even need to leave the lodge for fantastic bird-watching. The hotel's relaxed, 'help yourself' attitude has you blissed out in no time - but if you need a little help switching off, the massages and yoga sessions are just the ticket.
