A huge and diverse country, India casts a spell over everyone who visits and you cannot fail to be inspired, charmed, bemused and occasionally shocked by the rich cultures, colours, smells and sounds of this diverse nation.

Our India travel specialists have cruised along the sleepy backwaters of the south, encountered tigers in the game-rich wildlife parks in central India, met princes at palaces in the deserts of Rajasthan. They have sailed along the Ganges to the holy city of Varanasi, explored tea plantations in the  Himalayan foothills around Darjeeling and trekked through the stunning landscape of Ladakh in the very north. Few destinations offer the sensory assault that India does and it leaves a lasting impression long after your return.

Vibrant and bustling in parts, quiet and rural in others, Rajasthan - the land of palaces, princes and turbans -  is the perfect introduction to luxury travel in India and will allow you to take in Delhi, Agra (the Taj Mahal), Mumbai, Udaipur, Jodphur, Jaipur and the incredible desert city of Jaisalmer.

Meanwhile in South India tourism is not as prevalent as it is in the north and it offers a gentle introduction for those who have not had an India holiday before., Kerala, in the far south of the country, offers a calmer experience for those on an India holiday.  Best-known for its Backwaters, a vast network of palm-lined canals and lakes, which can be explored on a rustic rice barge, this quiet, heady state is also home to the Western Ghats, which offer wonderful walking trails through tea and spice plantations, little visited tropical beaches and Ayurvedic retreats.

Wildlife-lovers will be fascinated by a visit to the states of Central India where a network of national parks harbour the elusive Bengal tiger as well as leopards, sloth bear, hyena, jungle cat, civet, porcupine, honey badger, deer and a plethora of birdlife. There are a number of excellent camps and lodges serving the parks and a trip to this region can combine a visit to one or more parks for those seeking Tiger tours in India, with time left for exploring India's cultural side.

Alternatively, a visit to North East India combines time spent in the colonial capital Calcutta with gentle walking and exploring in the Himalayan foothills of the Darjeeling region.  Of course, this is only a small snapshot of the myriad of highlights available on a luxury India holiday - there are plenty more that we would be delighted to inspire you with.

The Serai - Jaiselmer

The Serai is one of our favourite properties - a unique luxurious tented camp set over one hundred acres in the Great Thar Desert, close to the golden fortified town of Jaisalmer. The enormous tents are airy and bright and the facilities and service are second to none. Easily included in a trip taking in the Taj Mahal and Rajasthan's fascinating sights, the experience of staying at The Serai is bound to be a highlight.

The Serai is included in our Rajasthan Revival itinerary and can be included in any of our tailor-made holidays to India.
