Sri Lanka in Style

Day 1 - Arrive in Colombo and drive to Sigiriya
Upon arrival in Sigiriya check in to Vil Uyana where you will spend the next three nights. Vil Uyana is a peaceful retreat in Sri Lanka's cultural triangle. Renowned for being one of the first hotels in the world to construct its own private nature reserve this hotel is both remarkable and unique. Vil Uyana has 25 rooms all of which are spacious, open structures suspended on stilts above the water and all of them are built with traditional thatched roofs. The rustic exteriors are deceptive though as in actual fact the rooms are incredibly lavish and support all the mod-cons, some even have their own plunge pools.

Day 2 - Visit the ancient city of Anuradhapura and Mihintale
You will have an early start this morning before heading towards Anuradhapura. En route - stop and visit the 12 metre high Buddha at Aukana dating back to the 5th century. After this continue on to Mihintale and Anuradhapura, a monastic city built around four forested hills. Mihintale is also known for being the birth place of Sri Lankan Buddhism and is a place of great spiritual importance on the island. Other highlights include Anuradhapura's monuments and gleaming white dagobas that rise out of the jungle showing a very sophisticated ancient civilisation. Boasting the oldest dams in the world as well as the sacred Bodhi tree, the oldest historically documented tree in the world, this ancient city attracts Buddhist pilgrims from all over Asia.

Day 3 - Visit Polonnaruwa and climb Sigiriya Rock
This morning you will drive to Polonnaruwa, the famous medieval capital of Ceylon. Spend the morning exploring the ancient city. After some time back at the hotel relaxing you will drive a short way to Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Rising an impressive 200 metres from the plains, it is one of Sri Lanka's most fascinating citadels. It used to have a palace that stood at the summit and it is impossible not to marvel at this architectural achievement. Each of the materials used would have had to have been manually carried and hoisted to the top of the sheer rock face.

Day 4 - Drive to Kandy, via Dambulla Cave Temples
After breakfast you travel to Dambulla where you will visit the five magically lit caves that feature hand carved Buddha statues, some of which date back to the 2nd century BC. From here you will continue to Kandy where you will enjoy the rest of your day at leisure in your hotel. In the late evening you can visit the Temple of the Tooth, which houses Sri Lanka's most famous relic, a fragment of Buddha's tooth. The best time to do this is during the evening Puja at 7pm allowing guests to bear witness to the beautifully lit temple and sounds of chanting and drums.

Your accommodation for the next two nights is the Kandy House. This beautiful 200 year old villa, recently converted into a luxurious boutique hotel is stunning. With a palm fringed infinity pool and delicious Sri Lankan and Western fusion cuisine, nothing is too much trouble for the charming staff. The nine suites are set around a central two storied courtyard and each suite comes furnished in antique furniture with a large modern bathroom. It also features a charming courtyard and breakfast and dinner are served on the veranda overlooking the gardens.

Day 5 - Sightseeing in and around Kandy
Spend your morning at leisure. You will then be picked up by your chauffeur guide and taken to the Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya. From here you will continue on to the Piawella Elephant orphanage at Rambukkana. After lunch by the river, return to Kandy where you can visit the various gem and jewellery shops before returning to your hotel.

Day 6 - Take a train into the hills to Hatton
This morning travel to Peradeniya where you will board the morning train taking you up into the tea country. Enjoy spectacular views of the rolling tea plantations and subject to availability you will be traveling 1st class in the observation car that boasts panoramic views as you whistle through the surrounding countryside. On arrival at Hatton you will be met and transferred to your hotel where the rest of the day will be spent at leisure.

Ceylon Tea trails comprises of four colonial era tea planter's bungalows. Each bungalow, built between 1890 and 1939 offers gracious living thanks to authentic period furnishings and an array of helpful staff. The delicious food is cooked to order and ranges from Western food to traditional Sri-Lankan classics. Three out of the four bungalows have their own swimming pools and all have wonderful terraced lawns overlooking the views.

Day 7 - Tea Experience
Understand the tea making process, visiting a working tea factory. Hiking, biking and relaxing in the beautiful tea hills.

Day 8 - Drive to Yala National Park. Afternoon safari.
This morning you will wake up early and drive to Yala National Park. On arrival you will be met by your hosts who run your tented safari in the buffer zone of the National Park. With excellent wildlife viewing opportunities you are likely to see a huge diversity of animals. The added advantage of staying in the buffer zone, means you will get ahead of the crowds for your game drive in the morning.

Your accommodation for the next two nights is Leopard Safaris camp. Comprising of canvas tents, each of which has a queen sized bed and a small sit out area, this is real camping. Toilets and showers are not en-suite but the fantastic staff here will make every effort to make you as comfortable as possible. The food is delicious and your guides are extremely knowledgeable.

Day 9 - Morning and afternoon safaris inside the park
Rise early for your dawn game drive. With the highest concentration of leopards in the world and the fact that they have no other predators to fear, you have a good chance of spotting one of these magnificent cats. The best times for leopard sightings are at dawn and dusk when they start thinking of hunting. Other animals you might see whilst at Yala include elephant, sloth bears, crocodiles, deer, moneys and a variety of beautiful birds.

Day 10 - Morning safari, then drive to Galle
After your final morning safari and breakfast you will be met at the park gates and chauffeured to Galle. Here you will be spending the next two nights at Amangalla. Set in the centre of a 400 year old Galle Fort, this hotel was formerly known as the New Oriental Hotel, founded in 1863. It has 29 rooms and suites, all offering period charm whilst including all the modern amenities and fantastic bathrooms. The sense of history in this hotel is incredible and no detail has been overlooked making for an incredibly luxurious stay.

Day 11 - Explore the charming walled town of Galle
Spend the morning on a walking tour of the Galle Fort. Then spend an afternoon of leisure on the beach or shopping for antiques and jewellery.

Day 12 - Drive to Wadduwa
Located right on the coast, spend the rest of the day at leisure. Either relax at your hotel, on the beach, or explore the Local area.

Your last two nights will be spent at Reef Villa. Located right on a gorgeous sandy beachfront, this private and unique hotel has just seven exclusive suites set in large tropical gardens. Decorated in an Indo-Colonial style this property boasts extravagance. The main building is a huge, high ceilinged structure giving of a light and airy atmosphere and the suites come equipped with huge bathrooms and four poster beds. Other hotel features include a refreshing pool located under the palms and the beach which is found just one step from the back gate.

Day 13 - Day at leisure
Spend your last day relaxing on the beach or treat yourself to a pampering in the award winning spa.

Transfer to Colombo for your international flight home.
