Day 2 - Borobudur
Rise early (at approximately 5:00 AM) to witness the sun rise over the world famous Borobudur temple.  This is the best time of the day to explore this fascinating Buddhist Temple, which UNESCO rightly calls one of the greatest Buddhist monuments in the world.   Rediscovered by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles in 1814, it quickly caused a sensation among the world's scholars.  It was the Sailendra dynasty that embraced Mahayana Buddhism in the early 9th century and after 70 years,  the temple was completed in AD 830. Structurally, Borobudur is a massive pyramid that rises up from the green plains like its neighbouring volcanoes.  From its 150,000‐square‐foot base,  one has to climb up six tiers to the top. The top level is dotted with 72 small, latticework stupas, each with a statue of Buddha inside, visible through the grates.  It is estimated that over one million blocks of stone were used in the construction.

Your guide will then escort you on to nearby Mendut temple. Older than Borobudur, built around AD 800, it is located less than two miles away and is an impressive archaeological site in its own right.  Examine carvings that depict scenes from Buddhist literature along with Indian morality parables on the exterior, as well as a rare Buddha statue seated on a chair within the temple itself.

Return to the hotel for breakfast as the crowds start to arrive and spend the rest of the day at leisure to relax or explore by yourself.

Overnight:  Amanjiwo in a Borobudur Suite (Breakfast included)

Day 3 - Yogyakarta - Prambanan Temple
After breakfast your guide will collect you and take you to visit the Kraton. This is the Sultan's Palace that was built between 1756 and 1790; a splendid example of traditional Javanese court architecture. Conceived not only as the Royal residence, but built as the focal point of the entire kingdom, the palace was built as a miniature model of the Javanese‐Hindu State.  Each gateway, pavilion, courtyard, even trees and open fields ('alunalun') carry a different symbolical meaning.

Afterwards jump into a becak (Rickshaw‐pedicab) to visit the Taman Sari Complex, which is also known as the Water Castle, built in 1758 as an elaborate retreat with a two‐story mansion built on an elevated mound arising out of an artificial lake. Its impressive facilities include an underwater tunnel, sunken bathing pools, meditation chambers and 18 lavish tropical gardens.

Finish at the beautiful 9th century Prambanan Temple.  Built by the Sanjaya Dynasty, a Hindu group thought to be political rivals to the Buddhist Sailendra rulers in the area, Prambanan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia .  The complex was largely abandoned in the 930s following an eruption of Mt. Merapi.  Many of its 240 structures subsequently collapsed during a major earthquake in the 16th century, and they were largely forgotten by the outside world until the 19th century.  More damage was inflicted during the 2006 earthquake and although the buildings are still in various states of repair, they retain an aura of being lost in time, awaiting discovery.

Return to your hotel by mid-afternoon and relax.
