Crossing the renowned Drake Passage takes a couple of days, during which you will have a variety of relevant lectures by your erudite crew. Thereafter the ship glides gently in the calm waters of the Antarctic, allowing you to make the most of the astounding land and seascapes and easy landfall is made using small zodiac boats which usually make excursions twice a day. Your forays will depend very much on weather conditions, conditions on shore and the locations of wildlife, but rest assured the experience will be one to remember. From seeing (and hearing!) an iceberg calve a few hundred metres away, to being followed about by Chinstrap penguins, from witnessing a humpback whale breaching to exploring the British heritage site of Port Lockroy (which also has a post office from which you can send a postcard or two).
