The Italian Lakes
There are some parts of the world so spectacular that they become ingrained in our subconscious, penned into poetry and publications, lauded in literature and favoured for photo shoots, filming, festivals and events. We are hardly aware of it, but, from an early age, rarely a week goes by in which we don't absorb their imagery, from somewhere.
One such area is the Italian Lakes - a muse for the romantic poets and a classic age-old retreat for smart Europeans. It's an incredible Mediterranean lifestyle in a mountain setting, with the backdrop of the dramatic snow-capped Rhaetian Alps, witness to centuries of jostling by aristocracy, literary figures and celebrities for primary positioning on the lake shores. Almost deserted in the winter, the region awakens with the first signs of spring and the picturesque villages of Bellagio, Menaggio, Tremezzo and Varenna blossom into life.
Lake Como's fabled shores are ringed by historic villas with sumptuous gardens, surrounded by castles, monasteries and Romanesque churches, all rich in history and character, picture perfect in their setting. For gastronomes there are no shortage of sumptuous restaurants, many accessible effortlessly by boat and for the fit and the energetic everything from wind-surfing and rafting, biking, trekking and rock climbing are on offer.
