  4. Day 3 Luxor

Today is an exciting day full of fascinating sights. You will begin your adventure at the Valley of the Kings, chosen as a remote burial ground because of its secluded location amid limestone hills. You will also visit one of the most beautiful of the royal mortuary temples, the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, and the Colossi of Memnon, two massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III. A delightful lunch will be served on board, after which you will visit the Temples of Karnak and Luxor on the East Bank. Karnak is a vast complex of temples, chapels and pylons with the Temple of Anum at its heart. The Temple of Amun lay buried under sand for more than 1,000 years before excavation began in the mid-19th century. Today, the huge task of restoration continues. This is your last evening in Luxor before you set sail for El Hegz Island in the morning.

  5. Day 4 Luxor - El Hegz Island

This morning, you will leave land behind and sail for seven hours along the Nile towards Esna. Esna is best known for the Temple of Khnum. This Graeco-Roman structure was built on the site of a much earlier temple by the 18th Dynasty pharaoah, Tuthmosis III. The temple was built almost nine metres below ground level and although the hypostyle hall was excavated by Marriette, the rest of the temple is still buried beneath the modern town. Following a leisurely lunch, you will set sail again for four hours to your final stop of the day, El Hegz, a small island in the north of Edfu. You will moor here overnight.

  6. Day 5 El Hegz Island - Ramadi Village

Today the first stop is El Kab, the site of ancient Nekheb, approximately 80km south of Luxor. El Kab comprises prehistoric and Pharaonic settlements and rock-cut tombs of the early 18th Dynasty. Leaving El Kab behind, your journey continues on to Edfu, a three hour sailing upriver and a perfect spot for lunch on-board. Here you will visit Edfu Temple, dedicated to the falcon headed god, Horus. According to ancient myth, Horus fought a fierce battle with his uncle Seth, who had murdered Horus's Father Osiris. Osiris's beloved wife and her sister collected all the pieces of the body that Seth had scattered all over Egypt and, with the help of the gods Anubis and Thoth, brought him back to life. He then descended to the underworld to be the lord and judge of the dead. Tonight, continue to Ramadi Village where you will moor overnight.

  7. Day 6 Ramadi Village - Sheikh Fadl

Following your first stop at Gabal Selsela, you will sail on for three and a half hours to Kom Ombo, a pleasant agricultural town 28 miles north of Aswan. Kom Ombo Temple is in a particularly beautiful setting overlooking the Nile. In ancient times, sacred crocodiles basked in the sun on the river bank near here. Once you have returned to the boat for lunch, you will set sail for two and a half hours towards your final destination, El Sheikh Fadl Island, a small village on the banks of the Nile where you will remain overnight.

  8. Day 7 Aswan

This morning, you will leave your charming crew and transfer to the Sofitel Old Cataract Aswan for two nights. The hotel is built in the Nubian Desert, rising grandly from a pink granite shelf with views of Elephantine Island. Your time today is entirely your own to enjoy the beautiful pool that overlooks the Nile, a hot stone massage in the spa or maybe to take tea on the Promenade and savour some gourmet French cuisine in the restaurant.

  9. Day 8 Aswan

Today's highlights will all be land based beginning with a visit to Philae Temple, located in one of the most idyllic settings in Egypt and dedicated to the Goddess Isis. There will also be a stop at the Unfinished Obelisk, which lies semi-finished in an ancient granite quarry just south of Aswan, and the High Dam. The dam was between 1960 and 1971 and had a significant impact on the economy and culture of Egypt. Your afternoon concludes with a visit to the Botanical Gardens by felucca. The gardens are located on Kitchener's Island, one of two islands in the Nile immediately adjacent to the centre of Aswan.
