A historic island once at the centre of Mozambique's slave trade, Ibo has history and an indelible traditional culture in addition to a stunning landscape that includes supposedly the best beach in the Quirimbas. Wildlife is all around: join the storks and flamingos that congregate on the sand in front of your room, listen to the cries of fish eagles circling above or dolphins frolicking in the bay, and keep your eyes peeled for colourful exotic birds as you explore sleepy backwaters lined with mangroves. The resort itself occupies a historic site with mansions over 150 years of age, surrounded by beautiful gardens of palms, frangipani and bougainvillea.
The 14 rooms are romantically named in the Kimwani language after the sights of Ibo - names such as Mweezi (moon), Kipira (yellow billed stork) and Suki (dolphin). All feature hand-carved wooden furniture and luxury fabrics, and they are located in three historic mansions and the old storage rooms. Sea Facing Rooms are split between the three mansions - Niassa, Bella Vista and Paradiso - with lovely views out over the sea, four-poster beds, high ceilings and large windows. Those in Paradiso Mansion are the largest at Ibo. The two Historical Rooms are located in the Niassa Mansion, with views from a large shared veranda over the garden and small dipping pool. Each has a small lounge that can accommodate two children if you are travelling as a family. Garden Rooms occupy the original trade and storage rooms in the beautiful gardens.
Self-sufficient families are welcome at Ibo and there is enough to learn about and explore to keep most youngsters busy for a few days.
