  2. Day 1 Arrive Waterberg

On arrival at Horizon Signature Safari Lodge settle into your lakeside accommodation. The lodge is located within an estate in the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve and is dedicated to hosting riding safaris in the surrounding diverse, untamed terrain. The lodge offers three warmly decorated double en-suite bedrooms, two of which overlook the lake from their private verandahs. The communal living and dining rooms are enhanced with a largestoep (verandah) and spacious grounds including a pool. In the afternoon guests familiarise themselves with the horses and the game reserve on an introductory ride, with sundowners at one of the hippo dams.

  3. Day 2 Waterberg Game Reserve

The morning is spent immersing yourself in a truly local experience. You'll ride to a nearby village where you can admire the hand decorated houses before enjoying a well-deserved tea at the historic Baber family homestead. Local children will then warmly greet you at the village creche and perform age-old songs and dances for you. On arrival back at the lodge take a refreshing swim in the lake with your horse before tucking into a leisurely lunch and enjoying some free time. In the afternoon the game reserve will be explored on horseback, with the chance of seeing hippo, giraffe and leopard. You'll learn how to interpret signs of the wild and the importance of bush medicinal herbs.

  4. Day 3 Waterberg Game Reserve - Vaalwater

Further time is spent in the game reserve following the weaving sandy trails before heading back for lunch. Guests are then invited to accompany ranch staff on a shopping trip to the small town of Vaalwater to explore the craft, art and gift shops. An active afternoon may be spent getting to grips with the addictive sport of polocrosse, a mixture of polo and lacrosse.

  5. Day 4 Waterberg Game Reserve

You may wish to perfect your newly acquired polocrosse skills this morning, or alternatively ride into the game reserve once more. After lunch guests will pack a small bag and set off for two nights luxury camping. Comfort is of the utmost importance, so the camp features beds made with duvets and cotton sheets, an impeccably presented dinner table and flushing toilets. However, the most striking of the features is the breath-taking views overlooking the Melk valley. As the evening draws in dinner and drinks will be served directly under the stars, accompanied by the sounds of nocturnal wildlife.

  6. Day 5 Waterberg Game Reserve

Today you'll set off from the camp for a full day of game spotting on horseback, with potential encounters with wildebeest, waterbuck, giraffe, impala and many bird species. You'll stop at a dam for lunch and a swim before heading back to the camp. Another starlit dinner awaits.

  7. Day 6 Waterberg Game Reserve

Spend the morning on the return ride back to the Lodge in time for lunch. Guests can either spend the afternoon in Beadle, exploring the crafts produced by a local farm community linked project or saddle-up for another ride, this time to spot hippo.

  8. Day 7 Game Drive

Set off to a local 'big five' reserve on a game drive, a perfect opportunity to take some photos from the comfort of the vehicle. Lunch is spent back at the Lodge with some free time. Shortly after afternoon tea you'll enjoy an active ride with challenging cross-country fences.

  9. Day 8  Waterberg Game Reserve

In the morning you'll be invited to try your hand at mustering and cutting some of the non-aggressive Bonsmara stud cattle. Your skills are tested whilst moving one cow away from the group; a tricky task even for keener riders. Reward yourself and your mount with a refreshing swim before lunch and free time. Following afternoon tea the energy levels pick up once again with a session of western games (gymkhana for adults) - a series of speed racing and timed games which will push your limits.

  10. Day 9 Waterberg Game Reserve

Your last full day is spent in the saddle and you'll cover kilometres of sandy tracks. Celebrate your final ride in the late afternoon with a sundowner on a rocky outcrop with views over the tranquil Waterberg landscape.
