The citadel of Carcassonne is a marvel of medieval architecture and might, and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within a short drive of Carcassone and the equally impressive Canal du Midi, is the Domaine de Fleury. Alongside its rich history, the region is known for its wine and cuisine, including the hearty cassoulet, a dish celebrated across the region at lively village festivals. For walkers and cyclists, the region has over 200 kilometres of way-marked trails which extend as far as the Mediterranean sea and the Pyrenees. Along the way is a vast diversity of landscapes: silvery lagoons, hillside vineyards, gorges and mountains. Even a dip in the sea is not out of the question - the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean are within an hour's drive.
