Domaine de la Hille is a treasure chest of possibilities in the south of France. The property has a tennis court, swimming pool and mountain bikes as well as being close to a number of little villages and the celebrated walled city of Carcassonne. Here I have created an imaginary itinerary for how your ideal holiday could play out over the course of a week.
Arrive on the Saturday: Today is all about unpacking, a quick dip in the pool to cool off, and then sitting down with a glass of wine in the evening sun. Forget the early start and waiting in departures at the airport, now you are on holiday.
Sunday: The first morning should be spent with a lie-in in the enormous master bedroom. When you do get up, breakfast will be waiting for you. The kids will probably already be back in the pool, and who can blame them with a pool like this! If you are feeling adventurous the house comes with mountain bikes, road bikes, golf clubs, yoga equipment, a boules set and even an archery set.
Monday: Who is the family tennis champion? Find out with a fun competition held on the Domaine’s private court. Have a picnic lunch under the shade of the trees and in the afternoon explore the grounds of the Domaine.
Tuesday: Head out on a walk to visit the nearby hilltop village of Fanjeaux, where a cool drink is waiting for you in the café, and great views spread out all around you. Explore the history of village, whetting your appetite for a day trip to a nearby wonder: Carcassonne.
Wednesday: Take the whole gang out for a day in this marvel of a city. To look at, it is stunning from all angles: a walled city with towers and ramparts seemingly lifted straight out of a medieval tale. Park the car in the new town and approach the walls on foot for the best experience. You will enter a maze of streets, with plenty of little restaurants and shops to keep everyone happy throughout the day. A walk along the ramparts is a must, you won’t regret it. There are a number of interesting museums including some not for the squeamish, such as the torture museum.
Thursday: Day trip to the Mediterranean. Pack a generous picnic, a couple of beach towels and plenty of sun cream and head to the coast! Only an hour from Domaine de la Hille are the celebrated beaches and warm waters of the Mediterranean.
Friday: Enjoy a day of complete relaxation by the pool. You’ve ticked all the boxes; beach, culture and quality time with the family. Smile and finally pick up that book you bought at the airport on your way out here.
Saturday: Ready yourself for the day with a good breakfast and start looking forward to the next holiday in South West France, you won’t want to leave!
