   Sitting on America’s west coast and home to Hollywood’s A-listers, this is the ideal access point to begin your road trip up the California coast and your hotel, The Maybourne, is perfectly located so you won’t need a car.  Treat the children to a day at Universal Studios with VIP fast-track to avoid the queues, spot the celebrity mansions in Beverly Hills, walk down the Avenue of Stars and feel like Pretty Woman as you browse the boutiques in Rodeo Drive.

3. Santa Barbara

   After three nights, collect your car and drive up the coast to Santa Barbara, stopping in Malibu to watch the surfers over lunch.  Hotel choices here are numerous, but Hotel Californian ticks the box for a great waterfront location and a pool to cool off in.  Santa Barbara is all about beach life and watersports with wine tasting thrown in. The next three days are at leisure to shop for trinkets on the pier with great harbour views, paddle board, surf, cycle or hike. Known as the Galapagos of the USA, a boat trip to the Channel Islands should not be missed.  Just over an hour up the coast you will find Pismo Beach with its giant sand dunes where you can raise your adrenalin levels speeding around in two and four-seater buggies.

4. Carmel by the Sea

   Drive on up the coast, stopping at Morro Bay to see the seals and sea lions, before arriving at Carmel-By-The-Sea.  Your base for the next three nights is L’Auberge Carmel, a rare boutique hotel close to the beach and central hub of this seaside town.   Monterey is just up the road and a visit to its infamous aquarium is a must and our guide will take you around the harbour in a kayak to spot the vast array of marine life.  Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is within easy reach for a day’s hiking amongst the Californian Condors and Red Tail Hawks.  On your final day, head to Moss Landing to a morning in a fast RIB to see the whales before taking the last leg of your road trip to San Francisco in time to fly home.  If you want to extend, you might like to explore Yosemite or enjoy rafting the Deschutes or Rogue Rivers in Oregon, or experiencing the true American West with a few days in a ranch to live the American dream.
