The coin-shaped Caribbean island of Nevis can be found just three kilometres from neighbouring St Kitts; together the two islands constitute the nation of St Kitts and Nevis. A peaceful haven with an abundance of flora and fauna from the lofty green heights of Nevis Peak down to its sandy white shores.

The verdant green slopes house an abundance of bird species including the Purple-throated Carib and Hummingbird, who are more active and easier to spot at dawn and dusk. Another, more treacherous, outdoor activity the island offers is climbing the 3,232foot volcano. Visitors might be fooled by what appears to be a gradual incline, but the locals know better and warn that even the most experienced climbers would be foolhardy to tackle the ascent unguided. The landscape is also ripe for being explored on foot or on bike, for those wanting to conserve energy on the saddle, it is recommended you should ride in a clockwise direction around the island.

Time would also be well spent exploring the historical highlights, including archaeological sites from its Indian inhabitants, some of which date back over 2000 years and the beautiful colonial architecture. See the remnants of the once prolific sugar industry at its old plantations, some of which have been painstakingly and sympathetically developed into boutique hideaways, nestled in the foothills.
