With the creation of its spectacular Homestead, an Alpine ranch providing exclusive accommodation for up to eight guests, Flockhill has transformed from a simple sheep station to one of the world’s most sought-after places to stay. Guests share the station with more than 11,000 sheep and 400 cattle, but with 36,000 acres of mountain, valley and tussock, there is more than enough space to go round.
Designed by Australian architects Warren and Mahoney, the Homestead’s simple pitch-roofed silhouette mirrors the barns and outbuildings of the station’s farming heritage. Stepping inside, however, and the feel is anything but agricultural. Laid out in a single strip to provide constant views over Lake Pearson and Sugar Loaf Mountain, it’s a striking, contemporary space of smooth limestone floors, vaulted timber ceilings and walls of stylishly moulded concrete. Floor to ceiling windows open onto a vast deck where you’ll find an outdoor dining area with wood-fired barbecue and shimmering swimming pool poised before yet more breathtaking mountain vistas.
