Clare Watkins, Red Savannah's Europe specialist

My love affair with Italy really is a longstanding one. It began in earnest at university, during my year abroad. I spent the year living above a gelateria in Rome’s lively Trastevere district. I was regularly indulged with free samples, and I’m still quickly able to discern good quality gelato from the inferior product sometimes presented to tourists.

Since that first year living in Italy, I have returned regularly. I have visited pretty much every corner of Italy, and all of its islands. Despite these countless visits, there is always somewhere – or something – new to discover. That is the beauty of Italy. Layer upon layer of history is waiting to be peeled back, in every single region. And that’s before you get to the arts – or the food! Each area of Italy has its own distinctive cuisine, and taking a food-themed journey through the country is a great way to learn more about Italy’s strong regional identities. Enjoying the country’s food doesn’t even need to be about fine dining – even Italian ‘fast food’ is always done exceptionally well.

Whenever I go back to Italy, I love beginning the day perched at a bar with a tiny cup of wonderfully strong coffee, taking in the buzz of local life all around me. What I enjoy most of all though is the ice cream. No matter the season, I try to have a small bit of gelato every day that I am in Italy. It takes me right back to that first year living above the gelateria, and it makes me feel truly at home.

  • "On a general note - I must say I am utmost impressed with your customer service, it's extremely good and distinguishes you from many others, thank you."

  • "We finally made our trip to Italy. It was fantastic and I wanted to say thank you for working so hard to get the Villa. The Red Savannah team were perfect and our hostess & villa staff were the best. Our trip was a well-oiled machine. BRAVO!"

    P.S. - Italy
