Louisa Lewis, red Savannah's Mediterranean villa specialist

Many people think they already know Mykonos before they have visited. The timeless streets of Chora, which look like something out of a vintage travel poster. The sight of the island’s majestic windmills looking out to the Aegean Sea. The stories of legendary nightclubs which pulse with energy until sunrise.

Mykonos is all these things, but also so much more. The challenge can be how to carve out a slice of the island that is completely your own – and this is where a private villa comes into its own. For me, this really is the best way to experience Mykonos. Leisurely meals in the balmy summer air can be enjoyed on the expansive private terrace of your villa - without the jostle of the next group clamouring for your table. Unforgettable views of the glittering Aegean waters and mythical Delos beyond, can be absorbed in complete privacy from your infinity pool. Your nights can be peaceful and untroubled by the thump of DJ beats – unless you are the one organising the party!

Even if you cannot travel during the shoulder season months (in my opinion, the very best time to go), my best advice for Mykonos is to embrace it for everything that it is. There are instagrammable streets and glamourous beach clubs for those who seek them, but there are also irresistible coves of soft golden sands and turquoise waters that I have struggled to find the like of anywhere else in the Greek islands. I also find the people of Mykonos unfailingly warm, friendly, and welcoming – whatever the season. So dive right in to the island in all its glory. Take your fill. But always with the refreshing and restorative seclusion of an exclusive villa to come back to whenever you choose.

Visitors on the sands of Kapari Beach in Mykonos

KAPARI BEACH

On an island where quieter beaches are hard to find, Kapari Beach is a haven of calm. The absence of loungers, restaurants, and beach bars deters many of the masses, but instead the aquamarine waters and powder-soft sands take centre stage.

MYKONOS TOWN

Well-visited but for very good reason, time in Chora is always well-spent. A beautiful network of whitewashed streets, the island’s emblematic windmills, and sunset drinks at waterfront bars in Little Venice are just some of the things likely to detain you here.
