I am really looking forward to spring and early summer in Provence. This is such an irresistible time of year, when April’s almond and cherry blossoms herald the arrival of warmer days. This is quickly followed by the arrival of lavender, poppies, and a tapestry of other wildflowers which blanket the hills and meadows from May onwards.

Where should I stay in Provence?

Provence is a rich and varied region which offers something to suit every interest, from fine food, wine, history, outdoor pursuits, and cultural activities.

For striking natural landscapes of limestone cliffs, hilltop towns and rolling valleys, a villa rental in the Luberon is highly recommended. This region is also known for its quintessential market towns, bursting with colourful produce, fine linens, honey and lavender. The glorious foothills of Les Alpilles offer further natural beauty, picturesque villages, and Provençal markets. In northern Provence, some of Europe’s most esteemed wines are produced. Further south, the Côte d'Azur region has a distinctive character all of its own, characterised by chic seaside towns and French Riviera glamour.

What is the best time to visit Provence for a villa holiday?

Provence is a year-round destination, but we feel it truly comes alive between April and October. The spring season (April and May) is a feast for the senses with blossoms and wildflowers beginning to blanket the hills. The more gentle temperatures make this a perfect time for hiking, cycling, or exploring intriguing historic towns with fewer crowds. Temperatures average at around 20C (68F) in late spring.

By June, the famous Provence lavender is beginning to put on a show, and the warmer days lend themselves to vineyard tours and poolside relaxation. Again, this a great time to visit Provence. Sun seekers will revel in the peak summer months of July and August, but we highly recommend visiting in September and even October if you can. Temperatures remain pleasantly warm (often around 25C / 77F), but the crowds are melting away, and seasonal delights such as the wine harvest await.
