Delightfully understated, Colombia successfully competes with its Latin America neighbours on virtually every front. Its beautiful landscapes range from the deserts and dunes of the La Guajira Peninsula reaching into the Caribbean Sea to the vast swathes of Amazon rainforest and the glacial valleys of El Cocuy where spectacled bears and chinchillas dwell and condors soar. Stunning too are the emerald hills of the Zona Cafetera, from where Colombia’s famous coffee beans originate.
The varied terrain makes holidays in Colombia ripe for adventure seekers with mountain peaks to conquer, rivers to raft and the colourful reefs of Providencia to dive. Adrenaline junkies will flock to San Gil – the country’s self-proclaimed adventure capital, where white-water rapids of the Suarez River cut through the eastern Andes.
