THE SEASON AHEAD

By late September, Laos is emerging from the rainy season, its rice paddies neon green and waterfalls thundering at their fullest. The showers usually begin to ease through October and the air feels fresher, opening up one of my favourite times to explore. Luang Prabang has an infectiously laidback feel at this point in the year. I can happily lose a morning wandering between its temples, galleries and cafés – the city’s coffee culture is reason enough to linger – before heading out to the Pak Ou Caves or Kuang Si Falls, where the surrounding forest creates an oasis of green around the turquoise pools.

From November through February, cooler days and lower humidity make it easier to venture further afield. In the south, you can drift between the 4,000 Islands, explore the ancient temples of Champasak or head into the Bolaven Plateau, a land of plunging waterfalls and coffee-covered highlands. This is also one of the loveliest times to take a luxury Mekong cruise. Travelling slowly along the river, watching village life along its banks, captures what I love most about Laos: there is rarely any need to hurry, and the country is all the better for it.

WHERE AND WHEN

When is the best time to visit Laos?

The best time of year to visit Laos is during the dry season of November to February. Less rain and more manageable heat make this the ideal time for Laos cultural tours, exploring Luang Prabang, the surrounding jungles and waterfalls, the rural villages of northern Laos, and the magnificent scenery of the Bolaven Plateau. Temperatures usually hover at around 27C (81F), making it ideal for travel.

From March onwards, the heat and humidity begin to increase, especially in the lowlands. Around late March or early April, the ‘slash and burn’ season begins. This is when some farmers cut down vegetation and burn the land in preparation for the new crop season. This creates hazy skies and poor air quality in some areas, so we usually suggest avoiding travel during this period.

June to October is Laos’ rainy season. Daily downpours can limit outdoor activities and how much you are able to explore. However, if you're planning a longer itinerary that includes a Mekong River cruise through Vietnam or Cambodia, this can still be a beautiful time to visit. The water levels in the Mekong Delta are high, opening up the possibility of travelling by river between Cambodia and Vietnam.

Where are the best places to visit in Laos?

One of the prettiest cities in Southeast Asia, Luang Prabang is an essential place to visit on a Laos luxury tour. Cradled on a slender peninsula at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, the city’s UNESCO World Heritage status ensures its old-world soul endures. Monks in burnt-orange robes can still be seen collecting alms at dawn, as the sun rises over Luang Prabang’s impossibly beautiful streets lined with time-worn French colonial villas, crafts workshops, and inviting cafes. The glittering glass mosaics of Wat Xieng Thong monastery are not to be missed, as well as the opportunity to browse for gifts at the vibrant Luang Prabang night market.

Heading north of Luang Prabang immerses you in landscapes of soaring limestone cliffs, invigorating jungle trails, and remote hill tribes hidden in the forests. The Kuang Si Falls and the Pak Ou Caves are just a short distance from Luang Prabang, but it is well worth travelling further north to the region around Oudomxay and Nong Khiaw. Here you can enjoy some of the most spectacular highlands scenery, and visit traditional communities still inhabited by the Khmu, Ikho, and Hmong peoples.

Beyond these key highlights, the capital city of Vientiane is worth a short stop to enjoy café culture and some interesting monuments, including Pha That Luang with its gleaming golden spire. The Champasak region in southern Laos is also a very rewarding place to visit. Here you can discover the ruins of the Khmer-Hindu temple complex of Wat Phou, take a cruise around the natural haven of the 4,000 Islands, or go off-grid on a scenic 4x4 adventure through the pristine Bolaven Plateau.

TIAO NITH — ARTIST

Tiao Nithakhong Somsanith, or Tiao Nith, is one of Laos’ most accomplished living artists. A descendant of Luang Prabang’s former royal family, he was trained from a young age in the classical arts of gold-thread embroidery, ceremonial stencil painting, traditional music, and court dance. Political change led him to France, where he pursued fine arts and earned a doctorate, but his ties to Laos remained unbroken. In 2002, he returned to Laos with a clear purpose: to safeguard the endangered royal arts on which his heritage was built. Renowned for his exquisite gold-thread embroidery, Tiao Nith now shares his knowledge with local artisans, temples, and cultural institutions worldwide, guiding projects that shine a new light on these prized artistic traditions.

FRANCIS ENGELMANN — WRITER & HISTORIAN

The historian and writer Francis Engelmann has spent decades documenting the cultural heritage of Laos, and was integral in the efforts to secure UNESCO World Heritage status for Luang Prabang in 1995. His significant volume of published works covers topics ranging from the multi-ethnic cultural make-up of Laos, traditional Lao architecture, and the French colonial period. Still residing in Luang Prabang, Francis continues to be a passionate advocate for the preservation of Laos’ deeply rooted cultural heritage.
