Deep in the heart of Africa is the continent’s best-kept secret: game-rich Zambia. The beauty of this destination is its wealth of wildlife and the lack of humankind. Apart from Victoria Falls, the world’s largest waterfall (called Mosi-oa-Tunya "The Smoke that Thunders" by the locals), this enchanting country is still very much under the radar.

All of the 20 national parks here are unfenced, so elephant, hippo, giraffe, buffalo, hyena and lion wander freely even outside of the parks’ perimetres. To the east, at the tail end of the Great Rift, lies South Luangwa National Park, 3,500 square miles of woodlands and floodplains and one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world. It has Africa’s highest concentration of hippos (50 per kilometre in the Luangwa River) and its unique species of giraffe, the Thornicroft, but it’s the frequency of leopard sightings that earns it notoriety. Also, South Luangwa is one of the few parks where night drives are allowed and so the opportunity to spot nocturnal creatures likes porcupine, civet cats and genets. To the south is Lower Zambezi National Park, the former game reserve of the Zambian president and as isolated and wild as the solitary bull elephants that roam through it. On one side the mighty Zambezi thunders through, while on the other is a high escarpment. Game can be viewed by canoe or on foot as it is said that the guided bush walk or walking safari was initiated here.

Rivers or rapids, on foot or in the air however you explore Zambia, Red Savannah can tailor-make an itinerary that will reveal the mesmerising magic of this exceptional African destination.
