Dazzling turquoise waters, soft, powder-pink sands and a warm, tropical climate make the Bahamas one of the most instantly appealing regions of the Caribbean. Made up of over 700 islands, the coral-based archipelago is also considered amongst the best snorkelling and diving sites on the planet.
At the country's centre is Nassau, from where the pick of the surrounding islands are easily accessible. Highlights include Eleuthera, celebrated for its appealing Georgian architecture, lively Governor's Harbour and warm, tropical waters. Just off Eleuthera's north-western coast is Harbour Island. Reached via a short boat ride invariably shared with crates of pineapples, the pastel houses of Dunmore Town and long, pink-sand beaches are as idyllic as anywhere to be found in the Caribbean.
Heading further north, the Exuma Sound provides perfect conditions for sailing and bone fishing. Along the Sound are a selection of superb, eco-friendly private islands, perfect for experiencing the ultimate castaway experience, albeit in world-class comfort and style.
