THE SEASON AHEAD

Though the peak summer season will soon be winding down in Crete, you’ll barely notice any difference as August moves to September. Set so far south in the Mediterranean, the island continues to enjoy plenty of warm, sunny days in early autumn, while the sea remains beautifully inviting for swimming. It really is a glorious time of year to be here.

If you want to balance relaxation with a little gentle activity, autumn is a wonderful time to explore the island beyond the beaches. The picture-perfect town of Chania is especially enjoyable once the crowds have thinned. I particularly love spending time in the Splantzia neighbourhood. It has so much character and a very local feel, with excellent family-run tavernas serving delicious mezze. Autumn is also a brilliant time to explore Crete’s dramatic interior on foot. With fresher temperatures you can cover more ground, and a walk through the Imbros Gorge offers spectacular scenery without feeling too demanding.

By the end of October, the season in Crete is generally drawing to a close. Our luxury villas start taking bookings over a year ahead for the following season, so now is a really good time to start planning for 2027. Where should I stay in Crete?

We recommend two areas of the island in particular for a luxury villa holiday in Crete. Many of our villas can be found around the sought-after area of Elounda in the east, where the pristine beaches and picture-postcard coastal villages still remain untouched by mass tourism. We also love Kolymbari in northwestern Crete, where our hand-picked villas boast fabulous sea views, and easy access to traditional seafront tavernas. This side of the island is also perfect for exploring the 14th-century Venetian harbour town of Chania, which is only a 30-minute drive from many of our villas in northwestern Crete.

What is the best time of year to rent a villa in Crete?

Our luxury villas in Crete can be booked right through from April to the end of October. July and August are the most popular months to visit Crete, and temperatures are at their hottest during the summer peak with long, sunny days. If you would like to experience a quieter side of Crete with fewer visitors and less intense heat, we highly recommend visiting in May and June. Similarly, we love visiting Crete in the late summer and early autumn; the months of September and October still bring plenty of sunshine and the warmest seas for swimming, but without the peak season crowds.
