THE SEASON AHEAD
Umbria is one of Italy’s most naturally beautiful regions, so to see it transform into a green paradise in spring is something you can scarcely believe. I am really looking forward to season ahead, both for the region’s spring and the early summer wonders. You can go hiking in the hills in mild temperatures, as wildflowers bloom around you. Best of all, the trails remain peaceful, with no one else around.
Being a very food-focused region, the different seasons in Umbria bring their own delights. In April it is wild asparagus season, and they grow in abundance here. These fresh, earthy greens are often paired with handmade pasta, risotto, or creamy truffle sauces. You will notice traditional trattorias starting to incorporate them in their menus as soon as they are in season, but you can also buy your own in the farmers markets. The private chefs we work with in Umbria can instruct you in how cook with asparagus during a cookery class, if you like. Or you can simply enjoy having them in delicious meals prepared for you at your villa!
As spring merges into summer, having a villa with a private pool really comes into its own. You can fully enjoy that reconnection with nature that comes from spending time outdoors in Umbria, but with the option of refreshing swims on hotter days. The peak season in Umbria begins in earnest with the arrival of the Perugia Jazz Festival in July, but even if you are visiting before then, booking early will give you the best choice of characterful villas.

WHERE & WHEN
Where are the best places to stay in Umbria?
One of the highlights of a visit to Umbria is immersing yourself in the beautiful countryside. Renting a villa in the pristine hills, woodlands and olive groves to the north of Perugia is therefore one of the best ways to experience it. You will also be able to visit authentic local villages, and historic towns like Gubbio and Citta di Castello.
South of Perugia, villas set around barley fields and gently rolling hills offer easy access to some of Umbria’s most beautiful cultural treasures such as Assisi, Orvieto, and Spoleto. From this area you can also explore the wine growing region around Montefalco.
When is the best time to visit Umbria?
Umbria is best visited between the months of April and October. Within this period, each season has its own special charm.
Spring in Umbria offers cooler temperatures ranging from 15C to 20C (59F - 68F), often with fresh morning air and mild afternoons. This makes it ideal for outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, and exploring picturesque villages before the summer heat sets in. By June, temperatures rise to an average of 25C (77F), with longer sunny days - perfect for enjoying alfresco dining or wine tastings under the open sky. During July and August, temperatures can reach 30C (86F) or more, making a villa with a private pool the perfect Umbrian base. Other regions of Italy get very busy at this time, but one of the joys of Umbria is that you can rent a peaceful villa surrounded by pristine countryside, untroubled by crowds.
Autumn is an enchanting time to visit Umbria. Temperatures are still warm – particularly in September – but the countryside is beginning to transform into a rich tapestry of autumn colours. Clear autumn mornings are wonderful for truffle hunting, and the harvest season brings Umbria to life in a very special way.
