LOCATION
Set on the very tip of a long peninsula in southern Mozambique, Machangulo Beach Lodge is technically accessible by road but more easily reached by an exhilarating one-hour speedboat journey. The lodge itself sits in the sand dunes right on the beach, a stretch of perfect white sand, opposite Inhaca Island to the north and with Machangulo Private Nature Reserve to the south. These natural barriers of sea and reserve mean that Machangulo retains a deserted and very secluded feel for anyone lucky enough to stay here.
ACCOMMODATION
As long as you can manage the steps (up to 80 of them) the Ocean View Rooms are the ones to go for with panoramic views of the ocean, Inhaca Island and the bay. These are ideal for couples and honeymooners although an additional bed can accommodate one child. Family Villas offer partial ocean views and have two en-suite bedrooms joined by a central lounge, bar and dining area as well as a private plunge pool. Finally, the Beach Forest Rooms are private and spacious, with two rooms each, and located right next to the beach.
FOOD & DRINK
The menu at Machangulo Beach Lodge naturally features a good deal of delicious local catches, traight form the Indian Ocean and those keen to venture out should check out Bemugi's superb seafood platters, served from his beachside grill on nearby Inhaca Island.
FACILITIES
The Machangulo Beach Lodge Spa offers a range of facials, body scrubs and immunity-boosting clay wraps as well as rejuvenating massages and pedicures.
OUT & ABOUT
There is no shortage of things to do around the peninsula and nearby Inhaca Island from beach picnics, snorkelling and diving to birding, kayaking in the mangroves and fishing. Go hunting for pretty pansy shells on nearby dunes and sandbanks and listen for the call of the African fish eagle as evening falls.
INSIDER VIEWPOINT
- A magical and isolated spot accessible only by boat, adding to the sense you've found somewhere very special and remote.
NOTA BENE
- There’s no jetty at Machangulo so be prepared to get your feet wet on arrival. There are a lot of steps around the lodge so please let us know if you would prefer one of the more easily accessible rooms.
