A loving restoration of the original house and the addition of a sensitively designed modern annex come together with Sowaka’s serene courtyard gardens to create an utterly delightful space. In the ryokan’s 23 rooms and suites, traditional design elements such as sliding screens and tatami floors combine with supreme modern comforts such as cashmere mattresses, custom-made Bluetooth speakers and gleaming bathrooms with freestanding bathtubs fed by the hotel’s underground springs.
