Offering a beguiling combination of authentic Brazilian community and cutting-edge art and design, UXUA Casa Hotel is a stunningly stylish beach escape. Located in the little village of Trancoso - a countercultural magnet that has been attracting artists from all over the world since the 1970s - this boutique resort is the brainchild of designer and creative director Wilbert Das. After years spent overseeing fashion brand Diesel, his vision has turned a collection of historic local Casas dotted around the village's UNESCO-protected central Quadrado into unique, individually designed suites. Each is a personality-packed, one-of-a-kind luxury hideaway. Original features like split barn doors and rough-hewn wooden beams blend with bespoke furniture and fittings handmade by Das and locally sourced art and antiques, to create a style that is both rustic, modern and unmistakeably UXUA.
Seu João (named after its former resident) looks like a traditional fisherman's bungalow from the front, but step inside, and on one side the wall has been removed to create a hybrid indoor/outdoor living space. In Eugenie, the largest of the resort's Casas, native wood is everywhere, including a living tree that grows through the roof. When you tear yourself away from your suite, experience pure Bahaian relaxation in the Almescar Spa. In the thatched treatment rooms, enjoy a range of treatments featuring fragrant resin from Almescar trees, which has been used by indigenous Pataxo Indians for centuries. Then head to the white sand beach to laze in the sun, swim in the clear blue waters and enjoy a cooling cocktail from an old fishing boat converted into a waterfront bar.
