Perched 950m above sea level in Ecuador's mountainous cloud forest, Mashpi Lodge is a stunning eco-lodge nestled amid a vast expanse of untamed wilderness. The brainchild of visionary creator and conservationist Roque Sevilla,it is at the centre of the Mashpi Reserve, 1,200 hectares of diverse ecosystems encompassing both cloud and rain-forests, which ranges in altitude from 500m to 1,200m above sea level. While visiting a place like this would usually require roughing, Mashpi Lodge brings a decidedly urban level of comfort and luxury to jungle exploration. Designed with the latest techniques in sustainable construction, the Lodge's huge glass walls and natural tones render it almost invisible amid the verdant foliage. The Lodge's 34m2 Wayra Rooms and three 46m2 Yaku suites are elegant examples of contemporary design, accented with warm, sustainable wood and equipped with deep Phillipe Starcke-designed bathtubs. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide around the clock show of the surrounding forest's constantly shifting sights and sounds, with subdued LED lighting and automatic blinds allowing you to create the perfect atmosphere easily.
When you are ready to venture from your room, you have a seemingly limitless natural playground to explore. Experienced guides, many of whom have grown up in the forest, will lead you on expeditions through the reserve to discover the astonishing range of flora and fauna that thrives here. Travel through the canopy via sky bikes strung high in the trees, get a 360-degree view of the jungle from the eight-storey observation tower and see the brightly-coloured inhabitants of the hummingbird garden. After a busy day exploring, recharge with a massage treatment in the Samay Wellness Centre before exploring Ecuador's rich culinary heritage in Mashpi's dining room, where you can sample dishes inspired by unique flavours of the forest like tuna and Andean miniature corn in a citrus reduction and Fettucine with mountain garlic.
