For a truly transformative, sand-between-the-toes island getaway, it’s hard to imagine a more perfect location than Isla Palenque, lapped by the waters of Panama’s Chiriquí Gulf. Inspired by the story of Robinson Crusoe, Isla Palenque’s owner Benjamin Loomis spent five years living in blissful seclusion here, before using his skills as an architect to craft a unique tropical resort that coexists in perfect harmony with its surroundings. Palenque means ‘sanctuary’ in the indigenous language, and preserving the island’s rich natural environment is central to its mission. Isla Palenque’s exclusive accommodation, just eight luxury casitas and a palatial villa estate, are built from sustainable hardwood, powered by solar panels and designed to minimise the use of water and energy.
This commitment to the environment results in zero compromises on comfort. Laid out along the sweeping Playa Palenque, the resort’s casitas are an effortless blend of rustic island features and contemporary luxury design. Shaded beneath thatches of palm leaves, these beachside boltholes blur the distinction between inside and outside, with open air bathrooms fringed by verdant greenery and expansive beds separated from the sand by nothing more than glass doors and a few steps. The Villa Estate provides for larger parties of up to 14 guests. Hidden away in the jungle above Playa Primera on the island’s eastern shore, it offers six-self-contained rooms, a stunning stone-edged infinity pool and expansive indoor and outdoor living areas with views across the blue ocean waters.
Dining at Isla Palenque is also driven by sustainable principles, with organic produce sourced from local providers making up the entirety of the menu. Overlooking Playa Palenque, the open sided Las Rocas is the venue for Panamanian specialities like tamal de olla (tamales cooked in a casserole) and super fresh ceviche made with the seafood sourced direct from local fishermen through the certified Dock to Dish programme.
