There’s getting away from it all and then there’s Sun City Camp. Laid out amid rugged towers of rock in a seemingly endless sea of rust-coloured sand, the setting resembles the surface of some far-flung planet as much as it does any corner of Earth. This is a place of wide-open spaces and endless skies – piercing desert blue by day, transitioning by night to a velvety black canopy alive with distant stars.
The camp’s accommodation builds on the otherworldly sensations conjured by its desert setting. Sun City’s signature Martian Domes, mounted on raised wooden platforms with private decks, add a space-age spin to desert life. Air conditioning keeps temperatures below the canvas dome cool and comfortable, while soft king-sized beds positioned before the wall of geometric windows make for an unforgettable wake-up call each morning. For a more traditional feel, you can also opt for one of Sun City’s Bedouin Tents or enjoy more space in a one or two-bedroom Panoramic Suite.
Your time at camp can be spent experiencing the majesty of the desert on a range of activities and excursions organised by experts from the local Bedouin community. You can traverse the sands on the back of a camel, or take a jeep tour over tumbling dunes and through rocky valleys, stopping off for traditional refreshments in a Bedouin tent. Join a guided walking tour to experience Wadi Rum at ground level or climb into the sky in a hot air balloon for a higher-level perspective.
After the day’s activities are done, recharge and refresh with authentic Bedouin cuisine in Sun City Camp’s geodesic dining hall. Look out for the speciality dish known as Zarb, a Bedouin barbecue technique where chicken and lamb marinated in smoky herbs and spices are slow-cooked in a pit beneath the desert sands.
