Day 2 Jerash, Ajloun & Salt
Meet your guide who will stay with you throughout your journey through Jordan, and head first to visit the amazing Greco-Roman site of Jerash. Jerash, part of the Decapolis (the ten big Roman cities of the East), has been called the Pompeii of the East for its unique state of preservation. The city features theatres, churches, temples (Zeus and Artemis), a Nymphaeum and colonnaded streets. Then head to Ajloun to see the castle built by Saladin - an outstanding example of Arab/Islamic military architecture and a linchpin in his campaign to oust the Crusaders from Jordan in 1189.
Continue to Salt City, an Ottoman Empire trading hub, and explore the old town and the narrow streets on foot. Back in Amman with time to freshen up, head out into the old town to Rainbow Street and browse the amazing street-food stalls from which supper will be gleaned, to include delicious shawarma, and falafel. Finish off with herbal tea or coffee, for which Jordan is justifiably renowned.

Then continue on to Madaba, known as the city of mosaics, where you will find the oldest map of the Holy Land on the floor of St George’s Church. Day 4 Petra
Visit Petra via the back door…Today's hike brings you into Petra via a spectacular but little-known Bedouin trail through the mountains. You will begin with a couple of hours' walk across open farmland before following the path across the eroded sandstone. Huge views begin to open up across the Great Rift Valley to the west. After another hour the trail descends towards Petra and opens onto one of the city's most impressive sights: the immense rock-cut façade of Ad Deir, the Monastery. You can rest and drink tea here, and explore the ruins, before following the stone steps of a Nabataean processional way down into the heart of Petra.
After wandering through the temples and tombs you will leave through another secret slot canyon (‘the Dark Siq') before turning back towards Petra and following the main siq for the classic entry into the city. This brings you out at Petra's most famous monument, the Treasury. This itinerary offers a long, wonderful day's walking around Petra, and means you can experience the two greatest approaches to the city in a single day.

This morning continue south into the magical desert of Wadi Rum. On entering the park, say a brief farewell to your guide and driver and meet up with your local Bedouin guide. Board your 4x4 to drive through the stunning scenery into the heart of the desert and visit some of the less frequented locations such as the narrow canyons on the way to Jebel Burdah and the natural rock bridge of Um Fruth. Along the way, your Bedouin driver will prepare a picnic lunch. In the late afternoon, board your camel and ride into your luxury camp in the middle of the Wadi Rum desert. Spend the night under canvas in a charming, extremely comfortable little desert camp and dine under the desert stars.
