Crete, with its rugged landscapes and stunning coastline, is home to some of the best beaches in Greece. Boasting 139 Blue Flag beaches, more than any other Greek island, Crete is the perfect destination for a family-friendly beach holiday. And, while the accessibility of many of the island’s beaches is a key attraction, Crete also conceals an alluring collection of hidden coves and tranquil bays. These remote beaches prioritise natural beauty over amenities, but this only adds to their unspoiled charm. Our Crete experts share their top five secluded beaches you won’t want to miss:
VOULISMA
Voulisma, known as ‘Golden Beach’, is a sweeping sandy bay flanked by greenery and rugged cliffs. It’s just one of many exceptional beaches on the Lasithi Plateau, a fertile valley on the northwest side of the towering Dikti mountain range.
The crystalline waters of Voulisma are so clear you’ll be mesmerised by the sight of fish darting just beneath the surface, even without the need for a snorkel. This pristine stretch of coast has earned itself a Blue Flag, meaning it is more discovered than it used to be. You may therefore also wish to kayak to neighbouring Istro Bay, a quieter, more secluded beach. The bay also offers some fine local tavernas for lunch or drinks.
- Why Visit: Ideal for families, this safe and sandy beach offers the option to explore nearby, more secluded bays.
- Whilst in the area: Retrace Minoan footsteps in Gournia, near Pachia Ammos. These archaeological remains show traces of a one-time port settlement featuring a manor house, cobbled streets and a central square, all abandoned around 1200 BC.
- Location: On the northeastern coast, 8 miles from Agios Nikolaos.
KOLOKYTHA
Travelling northwards up the coast from Voulisma, Kolokytha is located on the small island of Kalydon, opposite the laidback town of Elounda. Connected by a bridge, the beach is reached by an adventurous drive through rocky landscapes followed by a 10-minute hike from the car park.
Although the beach does attract visitors in the high season, it still feels more secluded than others in the area, especially if you visit early in the morning or late afternoon. The absence of facilities allows you to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the location.
- Why Visit: A secluded and unspoiled beach, free of umbrellas and sunbeds, perfect for those seeking peace and solitude.
- Whilst in the area: Bring Victoria Hislop’s novel, ‘The Island’, to life with a private guided tour to nearby Spinalonga.
- Location: On the northeastern coast, 2 miles east of Elounda.
KEDRODASOS
For those craving true seclusion, Kedrodasos is a must. Getting there is an adventure, but the reward is a pristine beach away from the crowds. The beach is around 400-metres wide, dotted with fragrant juniper trees hanging over flat rocks offering a shady escape from the midday sun.
Wildlife thrives in the area, including eagles, falcons, and various species of sea turtles nesting on the beach or swimming in the waters. Spend time exploring tiny coves and inlets before diving back into the sea for a refreshing dip. There are no facilities at the beach so you should come prepared.
- Why Visit: Couples and adventurers seeking simplicity and beautiful waters.
- Whilst in the area: One of Crete’s best-known beaches, Elafonissi is just 1.5 miles from Kedrodasos. Its distinctive pink sand draws the crowds but there is a pleasant walk in shallow waters on the sandbar out to the nature reserve on Elafonisi island.
- Location: On the southwest coast, 23 miles south of Sfinari.
GLYKA NERA
Glyka Nera on Crete’s southern shores is fringed by rugged cliffs, and is most easily accessed via boat from the town of Chora Sfakion. This small and sheltered beach is also known as ‘Sweet Water Beach’ due to the freshwater springs that bubble up through the pebbles and flow into the sea. The water has a slightly sugary, rather than salty taste, hence the name. Further inland you can also find cascading waterfalls providing a cooling natural shower on warm days.
Though remote, Glyka Nera is home to a traditional taverna perched on a tiny rock. Accessed via a wooden walkway, the taverna offers a small selection of food as well as sun loungers. It can get busy, but the freshly grilled fish and succulent chicken souvlaki are worth waiting for.
- Why Visit: This authentic Cretan beach offers the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.
- Whilst in the area: Take a forest walk to Kormokopos Cave, starting from the small village of Agios Ioannis, home to just a handful of residents.
- Location: On the southwest coast, 2 miles from Anopoli and 5 miles from Chora Sfakíon.
FALASSARNA
Falassarna Bay is a collection of five neighbouring beaches spanning a two-mile stretch, with the central beach being the most popular. The surrounding beaches retain their wild beauty and sense of peace, especially in the quieter corners.
The beaches here are known for their breezy conditions, making them ideal for windsurfing. Families will appreciate the convenience of Pahia Ammos which offers easy access, tavernas, cafes, watersports, and a beach volleyball court. The scale of this section of the beach means you can easily find a sheltered spot of sand to call your own. During the summer months, the area's numerous beach clubs tend to draw larger crowds. We therefore recommend visiting outside of the peak season to relish the beach at its quietest.
- Why Visit: Perfect for families seeking a mix of beachside fun, watersports, refreshing swims, and glorious sunsets.
- Whilst in the area: A short walk north reveals an archaeological site where the ruins of a Hellenistic harbour whisper stories of ancient Crete.
- Location: On the northwestern coast, 9 miles from Kissamos and 32 miles from Chania.
