WHERE TO GO IN OCTOBER

This is a great month for ‘mid’ haul adventures in the Middle East and North Africa, where temperatures have now dropped to a bearable level and you can find the exotic within just a few hours’ flight. Alternatively, go all the way ‘down under’ for early summer sun and outdoor adventure.

Family half term holidays were made in Mauritius and its luxurious yet well-equipped hotels have everything from top-end spas to exhilarating water sports and superb children’s clubs to keep everyone happy. Plus, almost no jet lag!

Within easy reach of London you will still find blue skies and sunshine in Morocco.  The perfect long weekend or half term destination, discover the minarets of Marrakech with its buzzing, spice-scented souk, Moorish architecture and mountains.

Further afield but still relatively close by lies Oman with its family-friendly hotels, desert lodges and camps. Take a 4x4 journey into its beautiful interior to explore wadis (valleys) and mountains, the fortress and souk at Nizwa and the superb fort at Jabrin.

This is also a good time to visit most of India and especially Rajasthan with its fascinating imperial cities and rich cultural heritage.  Just to the north Nepal’s dramatic Himalayan ranges harbour traditional villages and spectacular scenery for trekking. Alternatively walk through the neighbouring kingdom of Bhutan and discover its hidden valleys and numerous Buddhist temples.

Adrenalin-filled thrills, astounding landscapes, fine wines and wide open scenes - New Zealand's North and South Islands have it all. For more wildlife-based adventure, it’s the last chance to take a safari in East Africa or fly over Namibia’s Skeleton Coast. While you are there, meet the indigenous Himba tribespeople at Serra Cafema and encounter plenty of game in Etosha National Park.
