We are now coming into the best time of year for World War II tours in Normandy. As spring progresses the days are getting milder and brighter. This makes it much more comfortable for being outdoors. The best hotels and restaurants have also fully reopened for the new season. If you are travelling in early June, you may well be able to visit some of the special exhibitions that form part of Normandy’s two-week D-Day Festival. Even if your vacation doesn’t coincide with this, a private tour of Normandy’s landing beaches and battlefields is always very moving.

Due to the emotional impact D-Day tours can have, I often suggest balancing them with gentler activities in Normandy. Time between battlefield visits helps you process everything you have experienced. Families can explore castles, seaside towns, or go sand yachting along wide beaches. Travelling east along the coast introduces elegant resort towns such as Deauville and Trouville. These were much-loved by Coco Chanel during her summers spent here in the 1920s, and the social scene around the polo is still legendary. If you enjoy art, again you’ll find plenty of diversions in Normandy. Venture further along the coast to visit the limestone cliffs that inspired over 50 works by Claude Monet, and visit the artist’s gardens at Giverny. 2026 is a significant year in the world of Monet, marking 100 years since the artist’s death in Giverny. Themed exhibitions are taking place across the region as part of the annual Normandy Impressionist Festival, which runs until late September. When is the best time of year for a Normandy D-Day Tour?

The best time of year to visit Normandy’s D-Day landing beaches is between April and October. Outside these months, many hotels and restaurants close for winter. Wind and rain can also make battlefield visits more challenging.

Normandy battlefields tours in April and May coincide with spring in France. Average temperatures reach 14C to 16C (57F to 61F) and the days are getting longer and brighter. This is a good time to explore the beaches with fewer visitors. Claude Monet’s gardens in Giverny are a lovely place to stop if you are travelling to Normandy from Paris. In spring, the gardens are bursting into life after the winter slumber. Brightly coloured tulips and daffodils make way for poppies, irises and roses as spring progresses.

Summer in Normandy, from June to August, brings long sunny days and lower rainfall. Average temperatures range from 19C to 22C (66F to 72F). If you visit in early June, you may even coincide with Normandy’s annual D-Day Festival. The two-week festival programme sees special exhibitions and events taking place across the region. Summer is also a good time to combine the beaches with other highlights, from Honfleur and Deauville to the cliffs of Étretat.

Autumn, from September to mid-October, is an excellent time of year for a Normandy landing beaches tour. There will be fewer visitors than during the summer, but still a good chance of mild, dry days. September sees average daytime temperatures around 18C to 20C (64F to 68F). October is cooler, typically around 14C to 16C (57F to 61F). At the end of October, hotels and restaurants start closing again for the winter season.

• Omaha Beach – An Omaha Beach tour is one of the most important elements of a Normandy D-Day itinerary. Omaha was the bloodiest of the D-Day landing beaches and is one of the defining places of American sacrifice in Europe. The beach itself is broad and often windswept, with little to suggest at first glance the scale of what happened here. Your expert guide will recount the powerful story of the very beach you are walking along and the bluffs above. You’ll be able to see the exact location of the German defensive positions, and gain a greater appreciation of the immense courage of the American troops who came ashore under devastating fire.
• Utah Beach – Utah offers a different perspective. Wider and flatter than Omaha, it can feel understated at first. Yet it was one of the most important American landing sites of 6th June 1944. Troops came ashore south of their intended position, but the mistake proved fortunate. Resistance was lighter, and they were able to move inland more quickly. The beach is especially powerful when seen alongside the airborne operations behind it. Your guide will explain the role of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, and how they helped secure the routes inland.
• Normandy American Cemetery – One of the most moving stops on a D-Day itinerary is located just above Omaha Beach in Colleville-sur-Mer. A Normandy American Cemetery tour is a poignant illustration of the individual lives lost in the conflict and the human cost of the liberation. Here, long lines of white crosses and Stars of David mark the resting place of over 9,000 US service members. Many died during the landings and the Battle of Normandy. The setting of the cemetery, looking out across the Channel to the route taken by Allied Forces on D-Day, provides a powerful connection to the events it commemorates. The sea, the beach and the battlefield are all part of the same view. With a private guide, the experience can be given the time and context it deserves.
• Pointe du Hoc - Set high above the Channel between Omaha Beach and Utah Beach, this exposed headland bears the visible scars of D-Day. You can still see shattered bunkers, bomb craters and clifftop positions. They show the scale of the assault with unusual force. Your guide will explain how US Army Rangers scaled the cliffs on 6th June 1944 to neutralise German guns believed to threaten the beaches. The climb alone would have been daunting. To do it under fire is almost impossible to comprehend.
• Arromanches-les-Bains - Arromanches adds another layer to the story. This small seaside town became the site of the British-built Mulberry Harbour. Sections of the artificial harbour can still be seen offshore. They are a powerful reminder that the landings depended not only on courage, but also on engineering, supply lines and planning. The Musée du Débarquement at Arromanches-les-Bains helps you understand this operation in an accessible way. Overlooking the remains of the Mulberry Harbour, the museum explains how Allied engineers created a working port on the Normandy coast, allowing men, vehicles and supplies to continue flowing into France after the landings.
