THE SEASON AHEAD
At time of writing, the full heat of summer in Jordan makes this a quiet time of year to visit Petra. Autumn isn’t far away though, and this is a lovely season for luxury holidays to Petra. In September and October, the days are still warm and sunny but the heat isn’t too punishing. I love designing itineraries that begin with the experience of Petra by night, where the Treasury is illuminated by over 1,000 shimmering candles. I’ll then arrange a private guided tour for the following morning, before the full heat of the day. Our expert guides can lead you on an alternative route where you begin at a different entrance and then travel in the opposite direction to many other visitors. You’ll walk along an ancient Bedouin trail that opens up onto spectacular views over the immense rock-carved façade of the Monastery. This is followed by a comprehensive guided tour that culminates in an atmospheric walk through the Siq and magnificent views of the Treasury. It's a remarkable way to experience Petra.
It is still possible to visit Petra in November, and the cooler temperatures are actually very pleasant if you’re keen to do more walking during your visit. It’s the same in spring. You can climb to the High Place of Sacrifice in relative comfort due to the fresher temperatures. From this sacred Nabataean site you’ll be able to take in breathtaking views over Petra and the surrounding mountains. It’s well worth the climb!

WHERE AND WHEN
When is the best time to visit Petra?
The best time to visit Petra is in spring and autumn. The milder temperatures in these seasons mean the city can be explored in comfort. The weather is also excellent for combining Petra with other key attractions in Jordan.
Beginning in spring, March is a rewarding shoulder-season month for travel to Petra. Average daytime temperatures reach around 20C (66F) and the archaeological site will not be too busy. April and May see the full arrival of spring. The weather is warm but not too hot, with average daytime temperatures of around 26C (79F). The conditions are perfect for walking through the Siq, climbing to the Monastery, and lingering over Petra’s carved façades without the full intensity of summer heat.
The months of September and October are equally appealing. Daytime temperatures peak at around 29C (84F), but with cooler mornings and evenings. The weather in autumn is ideal for pairing Petra with Wadi Rum’s desert landscapes or the restorative waters of the Dead Sea. By November, temperatures cool significantly. Average highs sit at around 20C (68F) making it a great time for hiking around Petra, Wadi Rum, and the Dana Nature Reserve. Petra and other archaeological sites in Jordan are usually much quieter towards the end of the year.
We generally suggest avoiding July and August. Daytime temperatures average 32C to 33C (90F to 91F), and the heat can make Petra’s exposed paths feel demanding, particularly around midday. December to February is also less popular for a luxury Jordan itinerary. Petra is still enjoyable, with average highs between 13C and 15C (55F to 59F), but the cooler weather makes other places like Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea less appealing.
