THE SEASON AHEAD

The new season is just around the corner in the Masai Mara and this is always a really exciting time. By June, the rains have mostly eased and the wildlife is easier to spot. Though the herds of Great Migration do not start appearing until July, there is so much incredible wildlife to enjoy here even if you are travelling at the start of the season. It also feels much quieter.

The peak season really begins in July and continues right through to October. The glorious weather of Kenya's dry season comes together with one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles, delivering safaris that are completely unmatched. If you want to experience the Great Migration in the Masai Mara, choosing the right camp is crucial. That is why I always recommend booking as early as possible to secure the most intimate luxury camps in the best locations.

There is something about the light, the rhythm, and the magnificence of the Masai Mara that always stays with me, long after I have left. I’ve found this to be true whether I’m visiting during the Great Migration or not. Spending time here unlocks a sense of freedom in me that I struggle to experience anywhere else. WHERE AND WHEN

When is the best time to visit the Masai Mara?

The Masai Mara is an excellent safari destination almost year-round. Its high-altitude position keeps temperatures steady, with warm days and cooler nights. Average daytime highs sit between 24C – 28C (75F – 82F). Early mornings and evenings can drop to around 12C (54F) – 14C (54F – 57F). Changes in weather in the Masai Mara are less driven by temperature and more by the wet and dry seasons.

The best time to visit the Masai Mara is in the main dry season of July and October. This is followed by another dry window between January and March. The only months we recommend you avoid are April and May. The long rains can make some tracks muddy, the grass grows high, and wildlife can be harder to spot.

• JANUARY – MARCH: warm, clear and excellent for big cats. The Mara’s resident wildlife is superb during Kenya’s second dry season. Highlights include spotting lion, cheetah and leopard in the shorter grass. On the Kenyan coast, the warm sunshine and clear waters make this a great time of year for a Masai Mara safari and beach holiday.
• APRIL – MAY: rainy season. We suggest you avoid these months if you have flexibility on when you can travel.
• JUNE: cooler, quieter, but plenty of wildlife to enjoy. Wildlife viewing improves as the rains of April and May ease. The bush begins to thin and animals become easier to spot. The Great Migration herds have not usually arrived in force, but resident game remains strong, and the Mara’s predators are active year-round.
• JULY – OCTOBER: peak safari season and the Great Migration. Kenya’s main dry season brings perfect conditions for safari and the best opportunities to observe the Great Migration. Wildebeest and zebra typically begin arriving from the Serengeti from July. The following months bring plenty of drama with herds thundering through the plains, often until late September. The dry season also concentrates resident wildlife around water sources, and animals are easier to spot through the shorter grass. Lion, cheetah and leopard sightings can be outstanding, and the predator-prey dynamics around the migration are extraordinary.
• NOVEMBER & DECEMBER: short rains, prolific wildlife, and fewer people. The short rains are usually far less disruptive than the long rains of April and May. They often arrive as brief showers rather than all-day rain. The landscape begins to green again, it’s a great season for birdlife, and there are fewer visitors around. While the Great Migration herds have generally moved on, the Mara’s year-round predator and plains-game populations are among its great strengths. By December, the Kenyan coast is dry and sunny once more. This makes it another great time for a Masai Mara safari and beach holiday.

Where are the best places to stay in the Masai Mara?

Where you stay can influence your entire Masai Mara safari. The options are either a camp in the Masai Mara National Reserve itself, or in a private conservancy close by. Both can be excellent. The National Reserve features iconic landscapes and access to well-known migration areas. Private conservancies often provide a quieter, more exclusive safari experience. Conservancies may also allow activities such as night drives, walking safaris, and more flexible guiding, depending on the property and local regulations.
